After earning his medical doctorate degree, Dr. Schmidt was selected for a highly competitive Head and Neck Surgery residency in Omaha, NE. In his final year, he was was selected as chief resident and afforded the opportunity to teach residents and medical students from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Creighton University – School of Medicine. Dr. Schmidt engaged in several scientific studies during his residency and was awarded first prize in 2010 by his program for a presentation on his translational research on the effects of melatonin in oxygen-starved tissues. During that same year, Dr. Schmidt also traveled with several other surgeons on a medical mission trip to Vietnam.
Following residency, Dr. Schmidt was selected from many of his head and neck surgeon and plastic surgeon colleagues for a highly competitive training program in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. This coveted fellowship with renowned surgeon Dr. E. Gaylon McCollough is widely regarded as one of the world’s premiere facial plastic surgery training institutions. Dr. Schmidt honed his skills as a facial plastic surgeon by caring for hundreds of patients undergoing cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face.

A final move to Denver, CO was the result of Dr. Schmidt’s passion for the outdoors, including snowboarding, rock climbing, canyoneering, and back-country camping. He also takes great pleasure in the art and science of cooking, photography, and videography. In response to doing what he loves, Dr. Schmidt notes, “it’s a privilege that I never take for granted. Every day, I wake up and am entrusted to combine my technical skills with an understanding of the human form and psyche to literally shape my patients – in the physical, social, psychological, and emotional sense. I come from a family of artists, and I used to believe I simply worked with a different medium. Despite the parallels, the biggest difference is in the impact on my patient’s life story. The real payoff for me is not as much in the physical result; it’s more about restoring or adding to the joy and confidence of my patients and the ripple effect on those people that surround them.”

As a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon and an expert of facial anatomy, Dr. Schmidt has a developed a particular niche in face lift, eyelid lift, skin resurfacing, nasal reshaping surgery and may be regarded as the “go-to” surgeon for facial rejuvenation surgery. His advanced techniques in facial reconstruction following skin cancer excision has earned the trust of many of Colorado’s most esteemed dermatologists and their patients. Dr. Schmidt is honored that his reputation spurred physicians in the community to vote him to join the ranks of Denver 5280 Magazine’s Top Doctors for the past 3 consecutive years.
